Common Readings for Advent
Advent is the four-week season that leads up to Christmas, and is the start of the Christian calendar. The church celebrated this period of preparation, self-examination, and hopeful waiting beginning about two hundred years before "Christmas" was introduced.

Advent is a season for looking back to God's faithful preparing the way of the Messiah, looking presently at our lives and our need for ongoing repentance, and forward towards Jesus' coming again in glory.

The book of Isaiah will be our "text" for this Advent, and we'll be tracking two "threads " -- Isaiah's clear, repeated and powerful calls to self-examination, repentance and returning to the Lord, and his incredible messages of comfort and hope. Each day during Advent, you'll have the opportunity to read one of the "tough "passages from Isaiah, along with his words of comfort and hope. We will also have a New Testament "thread " that will reintroduce us to Mary, John the Baptist and sections from Paul's letter to the Romans.
