Real God. Real People.

Real God

God is a Someone, not a something; a Person, not an object. We can only know God just as we get to know a person: through encounter and self-disclosure.

We Christians believe that God has chosen to disclose himself to us. We believe that because God is the Creator and Sustainer of all that is real, he is perfectly capable of acting within our world without being contained by that world.

So Christians believe that Jesus is “God with skin on,” God’s full and complete disclosure of himself through the person Jesus. We encounter the real God by “following” Jesus: paying attention to all that Jesus said and did and by learning to live life in his way, on his terms. The New Testament tells us that God is love. If this is true, it would mean that the most important thing about the cosmos and all that it contains, including you, is that it is created by Love for the purposes of living in love.

Real People

A mixture of the mundane, the messy, and the mysterious. Mundane is an ordinariness to the life of following Jesus. Often, Jesus’ command of loving is unspectacular; being patient or kind with people who drive us crazy or rub us the wrong way. Jesus is working in us daily in the midst of what’s right in front of us.

People are messy. We’re weird and confusing mash-ups of the noblest aspirations and the basest motivations. Part of us desires to do what is good, true and beautiful, but also know that we are capable of doing deeds of great darkness.

But churches are also mysterious. The presence of Jesus in the midst of mundane messiness. If what you seek is a church that meets all your needs and underwrites all of your current allegiances and commitments, every church will be disappointing. If you’re seeking for Jesus to change you from the inside out, then a mundane, messy and mysterious church might be just the place for you.
